Saumur Champigny- AOC by decree on 31st December 1957

Whether a fruity spring blend or with the richness of old vines, this wine is always a welcome guest on any table.

The vineyard
Geographical location: The "Champigny" denomination can be added to the Saumur appellation for the greatest red wines grown in specially defined areas around eight villages near Saumur.

Surface area: 1,500 ha (3,700 acres).
History: Under Henry 4th, Saumur was the capital of the Huguenots and from the 12th century onwards, developed as an important wine trading centre. Its name may come from the Latin ‘campus igni’ or ‘field of fire,’ because of the particularly hot microclimate that affects the area in the summertime.
Types of soil: The vineyard is dispersed into small islands, on limestone (chalk) hillocks with senonian and eocene outcrops. The Saumur Champigny vines occupy a remarkable position on the upper Turonian plateau and the chalk-topping plateaux.
Climate: Temperate oceanic climate.

The wine
Annual production:
85,000 hl
Basic yield: 55 hl/ha
Grape varieties: Cabernet Franc (majority), Cabernet Sauvignon, Pineau d’Aunis (fairly rare)
Dominant growing practices: Density of 4,500 to 5,000 plants/ha. Generally single Guyot pruning.

Sensory characteristics:
Bright garnet-coloured  appearance.Complex nose, with spicy and burnt aromas. The limestone contributes finesse and lightness, with notes of red fruits and flowers (iris, violet).
These stout, rich wines always show a fine and velvety tannic presence on the palate, and a fresh and balanced finish.
Serving temperature: 16-18°C. Younger wines should be decanted.
Ageing potential: Most Saumur Champigny wines can be consumed when still young, but their complexity only reveals itself after several years’ ageing (5 to 20 years).
